School Bus Safety

Please review the Georgia Department of Education's School Bus Safety resources for handbooks and publications highlighting the importance of bus safety.

  1. Students should observe the same rules as in the classroom.
  2. Respect the bus driver and follow instructions.
  3. No fighting, roughhousing, or disruptive behavior.
  4. No drugs, alcohol, weapons, fireworks, or tobacco.
  5. Remain seated, keep hands and feet inside the bus.
  6. No profanity, obscene gestures, food, or gum.
  7. Use headphones with audio devices.
  8. Be absolutely quiet at railroad crossings.

The danger zone is the 12-foot area surrounding the bus. Stay out of it unless boarding or unloading with the driver's awareness.

Loading: Door Side

  • Stay: 12 feet from road
  • Wait: for stop, door open, traffic stop
  • Look: for traffic both ways before approaching

Unloading: Crossing the Road

Unloading Across the Road
  • Walk 12 feet in front of the bus.
  • Wait for driver’s signal at road edge and again at center of road.
  • Never return to the bus without driver's attention.
  • Parents are responsible for supervision to and from the bus stop.
  • Arrive 5–10 minutes early at the stop.
  • Motorists must obey stop arms and flashing lights.
  • Always be alert near school zones and parked buses.
