Meningitis Fact Sheet

Meningitis Awareness

Important Health Information & Vaccine Requirements

The health and safety of our students is our top priority. Please review the following information regarding Meningococcal disease and Georgia's immunization requirements for school attendance.

What is Meningitis?

Meningitis is an inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Bacterial meningitis can be life-threatening in a matter of hours. It can cause brain damage, hearing loss, learning problems, or even death if not treated quickly.

School Vaccine Requirements (MCV4)

The Meningitis vaccine is required for school attendance in Georgia:

  • 7th Grade: An initial dose is required upon entering 7th grade.
  • 11th Grade: A booster dose is required before entering 11th grade (when the child turns 16) unless the first dose was given on or after their 16th birthday.

Recognizing Symptoms

Symptoms can develop rapidly. Seek medical attention immediately if your child experiences:

Stiff Neck
Nausea / Vomiting
Severe Headache
Muscle Aches
Skin Rash
Fever > 100.4

How the Disease Spreads

Meningitis spreads through contact with saliva. Remind students not to share:

  • Drinks, water bottles, and utensils
  • Lip balms or vapes
  • Toothbrushes

Prevention

Talk to your healthcare provider about:

  • MenACWY vaccine: Recommended for preteens/teens.
  • MenB vaccine: Protection against another type (ages 16-23).
  • Hib & pneumococcal: For young children.

What Should I Do?

If you think your child has meningitis: Get medical help right away. Go to the nearest hospital or call your doctor immediately. Early treatment with antibiotics can save your child's life.
