Influenza Awareness
Protecting Our Students and Schools from the Flu
Influenza (the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent flu is by getting vaccinated each year.
What are the Symptoms?
Flu symptoms usually come on suddenly. People who have flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:
Prevention is Key
Help stop the spread of germs at school and home:
- Get Vaccinated: A yearly flu vaccine is the first and most important step in protection.
- Stay Home When Sick: Keep students home for at least 24 hours after their fever is gone.
- Cover Your Cough: Use a tissue or your elbow to cover coughs and sneezes.
- Wash Your Hands: Use soap and water frequently, or an alcohol-based hand rub.
How Flu Spreads
Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by tiny droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze, or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby.
Antiviral Treatment
If your child gets the flu, antiviral drugs can be used to treat the illness. They can make the illness milder and shorten the time your child is sick. They work best when started within 2 days of getting sick.
When to Seek Emergency Care
Seek emergency medical care immediately if a child has: Fast breathing or trouble breathing, bluish skin color, not drinking enough fluids, not waking up or interacting, or fever with a rash.
