Weather Make-Up Days Update
Weather Make-Up Days Update
Dear Staff, Students, and Families,
This school year, our community has faced significant challenges due to two hurricanes and a winter weather storm, resulting in the loss of 10 school days. To address this, the board previously approved two scheduled makeup days on February 18th and March 17th.
We want to reassure you that, currently, we do not plan to take away Spring Break or extend the school year. However, to make up for lost time, we are adjusting the Testing Schedule by pushing it back potentially up to six days. This will give teachers and students extra time to prepare before testing begins.
To help our students stay on track, we will focus on making the most of our instructional time and prioritize key learning areas.
Here is what we are doing and how you can help: Our Plan and How You Can Help
-
Focus on Key Learning Goals: Teachers will focus on the most important priority standards and skills that students need to learn.
- Eliminating Non-Essential Content: Teachers will collaborate together to remove any activities or lessons that do not directly support students in meeting their learning goals. Teachers will be laser-focused on those priority standards, learning targets, and success criteria.
- Extra Support for Students: Schools will provide extra help to students who may have fallen behind due to missed days. This can be a critical step in ensuring students get the support they need. We also ask you to help with the following: check assignments and Parent Portal regularly, create a supportive learning environment at home, and communicate with teachers about any concerns.
- Student Attendance Matters: We need your help to ensure that students are in school every day, ready to learn. Attendance is critical as we work to make up for the time we have lost.
- Support for Teachers: We are working to minimize teacher absences so students have consistent instruction in their classrooms. The district-level offices are also identifying potential training and meetings that can be eliminated or rescheduled to keep teachers in their classrooms.
- Clear Communication: We will keep you updated on our plans and progress and ask for your continued partnership in supporting your child’s education.
Together, we can ensure that every student gets the support he/she needs to succeed. Thank you for helping us by encouraging your child to attend school daily, focus on learning, and stay engaged.
Thank you all for your patience and support!
Sincerely,
Yancy J. Ford, Superintendent
