Weather Make-Up Days

Weather Make-Up Days
Dear Staff and Families,

This year, the Effingham County School District missed a total of six school days due to two hurricanes impacting our community. Fortunately, we design our school calendars in such a way that we incorporate these potential weather make-up days. These days are identified initially as holidays; however, they are also marked as make-up days to be used as needed. Periodically, the district needs to change the identified holidays to a school day. This allows our staff and students to make up for lost instructional time. Since school was canceled six days this school year, I want to share our plan for these make-up days. Based on our current calendar, there are weather make-up days that are embedded during the school year. These make-up days are pre-determined on the 2024-2005 School Calendar adopted in June 2022.

The first two make-up days listed on the calendar, Monday, November 25 and Tuesday, November 26, fall during the week of Thanksgiving. We WILL NOT be using those days. Instead, our staff and students will have the entire week of Thanksgiving off as scheduled, allowing everyone time for family, rest, and travel.
Therefore, we are designating Tuesday, February 18, and Monday, March 17, as indicated on the attached calendar, as school days for both staff and students to make up for the missed instructional time. Academics are at the core of our mission, and providing our students with high-quality learning opportunities remains a top priority. Our goal is not to penalize anyone, but to ensure that our students have the greatest opportunities for academic success.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the make-up days, please let me know. We appreciate your continued support.

Thank you for all of your hard work,

Yancy J. Ford, Superintendent
