Springfield, GA, September 2, 2026 — At the Effingham County School District (ECSD) Board of Education meeting today, OpenAI officially announced a $4.8 million commitment to pay student breakfast and lunch costs across the school district for the 2026/27 school year, starting Tuesday, September 8. This is part of the promised Community Fund Operating under OpenAI's Project Camellia; the initiative is designed to provide direct economic support to local families.
Since announcing Project Camellia, OpenAI has met with people across Effingham County and local leaders to understand how its $80 million community commitment can do the most good for the people who live here. Earlier this week, OpenAI invited the residents to share their priorities for future grants, opened applications for local organizations, and launched a survey asking the public to rank potential parks and recreation investments.
