Our Community. Our Responsibility:

Keeping Our Kids Safe TOGETHER.

While Georgia’s House Bill 268 has brought new attention to safety requirements in schools across the state, Effingham County has been ahead of the curve, investing in industry–leading safety systems, training, and infrastructure for several years. We've committed approximately $10 million to safety improvements in the past four years.

But true safety isn’t just about locks, cameras, or technology—it’s about people. It’s about the mom dropping her child off and trusting that we’ll protect that child. It’s about the teacher who stands between students and uncertainty. It’s about our commitment, year after year, to make sure every child, in every school, feels safe and supported.

Our newest and most visible initiative is the installation of OpenGate weapons detection systems at all 15 school facilities. These high-tech systems:

  • Use electromagnetic and AI technology to detect weapon-shaped metallic objects
  • Are the same systems used at venues like Disney World and professional sports arenas
  • Were piloted at our two high schools and the College and Career Academy at the end of the 2024–25 school year
  • Are fully implemented at all schools as of July 31, 2025

The safety of our students and staff is our number one priority. Effingham County is leading the way—both in Georgia and across the nation—in the steps we’ve taken to secure our schools.
From advanced weapons detection systems to mobile crisis alert technology and strong partnerships with law enforcement, we are fully committed to creating a safe and
supportive environment where learning can thrive.

Here's how we're keeping everyone safe:

🛡️ 1. School Resource Officers (SROs) in Every School

Every school in our district has at least one, and many have two, dedicated School Resource Officers. These officers come from the Effingham County Sheriff's Office, as well as the Springfield, Rincon, and Guyton Police Departments. Their daily presence on campus provides both protection and mentorship, helping students feel secure and seen.

🔑 2. Access Control Systems

All school entrances are equipped with electronic access control systems. Every door remains locked during the day and can only be opened with an authorized key card. This measure helps us ensure that no one enters a building without being identified.

📹 3. Surveillance Cameras

Across the district, schools are equipped with hundreds of cameras—both inside and outside the buildings. Footage is reviewed by school leaders and law enforcement when needed, allowing for a quick, informed response to any issue.

🚪 4. Classroom Door Security

Each classroom is equipped with a secondary locking device called a KIST™ Lock, offering another layer of protection during emergencies. These are designed to secure classrooms quickly and safely if there is a threat.

📟 5. CrisisAlert™ System – Centegix®

Every staff member wears a Centegix® CrisisAlert™ badge that allows them to:

  • Call for immediate help from administrators and the school resource officer.
  • Trigger lockdown if there is an imminent threat.

This system meets and exceeds all safety requirements of House Bill 2683 and is already operational across the district.

📱 6. Tip411 – 24/7 Anonymous Reporting

Anyone—students, staff, parents or community members—can report safety concerns anonymously using Tip411. These tips are investigated immediately and taken seriously with law enforcement involved when necessary. It's a way for everyone in our community to "see something, say something."

🚨 7. OpenGate® Weapons Detection System

One of our most visible new measures is the installation of OpenGate® weapons detection systems at every school entrance. These state-of-the-art systems are:

  • Already in use at major theme parks and sporting arenas
  • Being used at all school and district events
  • Allowing us to screen individuals and belongings quickly and effectively, without long wait times or school day disruptions

📝 8. Drills and Emergency Preparedness

We regularly practice:

  • Fire Drills
  • Intruder Alert Drills
  • Severe Weather Drills
These rehearsals help ensure that staff and students are well-prepared in the event of a real emergency.

🏫 9. Interior Safety Measures

Safety continues inside the building, too:

  • Doors are always locked
  • Staff are consistently trained on safety measures

🧑🏾‍👩🏽‍👧🏽 10. Parent Partnership

Parents—you are a critical part of this plan. We need your voice, your example, and your partnership. Here's how you can help:

  • Talk to your child about school behavior and safety expectations
  • Remind your child to never open doors for others or enter unauthorized areas
  • Encourage your child to report anything suspicious—to a teacher, through Tip411, or to an SRO
  • Discuss "what if" scenarios so your child feels prepared, not afraid
