When your child is having difficulty with a word or makes an error, try these prompts to help them learn how to think in order to solve the word for themselves and become an indepent reader. Simply telling a child a word does not help them to become an independent reader.

    • What would make sense there?
    • Listen to yourself read. Did that make sense?
    • Does that word look like what you said?

Fluency is important for reading comprehension. Nightly rereading of the familiar stories your child brings home in their Reading Recovery bag will help your child to become a fluent reader. Fluency is not "fast" reading. It is the ability to read in appropriate phrases, using expression and adhering to punctuation.
