    Essentials of BioTech

    Course Description:  This course further introduces students to the fundamentals of biotechnology. Included in this course are additional applications and techniques in biotechnology that expand and increase the student’s comprehension of how biotechnology utilizes living systems to create products and enhance lives. In addition, laboratory applications learned in this course form the pivotal component distinguishing science theory from application in bioscience, like that of engineering and mathematics. Bioscience and the application of laboratory technique to the manipulation of living systems is a cornerstone of pharmaceutical, medical device, forensic science, environmental science, agriculture, alternative fuel, and green chemistry. 

    Prerequisites for this course: Introduction to Healthcare Science.

    What is Biotechnology? Biotechnology is the use of living organisms or parts (like proteins or DNA) to make useful products.

    Why is Biotechnology important? Because biotechnology processes are being used in so many fields. Biotechnology is responsible for huge advances in health care, including new medicines, vaccines and test-kits. But it is also important in other areas such as agriculture, the development of alternative fuels, discovery of new fibers to make clothing, and forensic criminology. 

     

    The activities and projects in the Essentials of Biotechnology course will introduce students to:

    • The past, present, and future applications of biotechnology as well as relevant careers. 
    • Appropriate safety procedures and equipment use in a medical laboratory.
    • The properties of atoms and molecules and their importance in the human physiological processes.
    • The structure, function and components of cells and the theory of manipulating the human cell in medicine.
    • Production and delivery of a product made using recombinant DNA technology.
    • DNA technology, including those in the fields of biology, chemistry, genetics, and microbiology.

     

    Students practice problem solving with structured activities and progress to open-ended projects and problems that require them to develop planning, documentation, communication, and other professional skills. 

     

    The Essentials of Biotechnology course ends with a suspicious death case where students will use the knowledge gathered during the course to solve the mystery.

  • Applications of BioTech

    Course Description:  The Application of Biotechnology course is the third and final course in the BioTech Pathway. The course provides application purposes for Biotechnology science through exciting hands-on projects and problems. 

    What is Biotechnology? Biotechnology is the use of living organisms or parts (like proteins or DNA) to make useful products.

    Why is Biotechnology important? Because biotechnology processes are being used in so many fields. Biotechnology is responsible for huge advances in health care, including new medicines, vaccines and test-kits. But it is also important in other areas such as agriculture, the development of alternative fuels, discovery of new fibers to make clothing, and forensic criminology. 

     

    The activities and projects in the Applications of Biotechnology course will introduce students to:

    • Appling biotechnological techniques to forensics including materials analysis, DNA fingerprinting and sample collection.
    • Utilize biotechnology for healthcare applications.
    • The role of biotechnology in therapeutics (e.g., gene therapy, vaccines. antibody therapy, cell therapy).
    • Describe how bioinformatics can be used to predict disease and determine treatment.
    • The principles of genetic mapping applied to healthcare or phylogenetics and evolution.
    • Non-medical applications of biotechnology, including enzyme production, biofuel and biomaterials discovery and manufacturing.

     

    Students practice problem solving with structured activities and progress to open-ended projects and problems that require them to develop planning, documentation, communication, and other professional skills.
