The AP Chemistry students completed their first lab last week. The lab's purpose was to determine the empirical formula of a hydrated compound. Lab experiments are a great way to have students apply the content.
I felt a little like Nemo when my alarm went off this morning! Although this is my 18th first day of school as a teacher, I still get excited anticipating the new group of students who will be in my classes. This year I am writing the Research III course curriculum. The previous two research courses focused on developing the students' STEM mindset and taking students through the research process as they learned technical writing skills and devised experiments or developed prototypes to test their ideas. The Research III curriculum focuses on innovation in product development. Have you ever seen the TV show "Shark Tank"? Think that, but on a high school level. The culminating activity for this year will be "Shark Week" where students will get the opportunity to showcase their group's project design in front of a panel of judges. The winning team will move on to the Georgia Tech Inventure Challenge in March! (Interested in being a judge? Send me an email!)
